Shocking news from a recent study by the Melbourne Intitute among people approaching retirement finds that Australians are generally not saving enough to maintain a living standard they believe is satisfactory for their entire expected life after retirement. For example, the projected life expectancy at retirement for a 55-59 year old single male is 17.2 years, yet calcu... more
In fact, fifty-two percent of men aged 65-69 are gainfully employed, according to a survey by the government-affiliated Japan Institute for Labor Policy and Training. A USA national survey of 25,000 businesses also found that the morning newspaper has become almost irrelevant to small business owners, with 48% going online immediately after waking (compared to just 3% reading print news). The report titled "The past, present and future of baby boomers as seen through the numbers" makes rather depressing reading. Statistics Korea painted this profile of the Baby Boomer. Mr. B is a middle-aged Korean man, born in 1960 to a rural peasant father and housewife. His generation prided themselves as the unsung heroes of the nation's rapid industrialization between... more
I'm always interested when The Economist tackles issues related to ageing. Here's one where they look at Executive Education where they comment that "older executives are shunning corporate training. This is a problem both for them and the firms they work for" The thinking is that for older executives formal programmes are often seen as a repetition of lessons already le... more

With the compelling title; "Time for 50+ to Make a Comeback" this article in Adweek recently argued that ad agencies should wake up to the fact that the near 80-million strong baby boomer market, where consumers spend billions of dollars, is still very important -- and perhaps should be spoken to by people actually part of that generation. The author points to several rec... more
Here are 10 quick business opportunities spotted by SmartCompany in Australia stemming from the Intergeneration Report recently issued by the Government. No big surprises but good logic.
